The Importance of Daily Sun Protection

The Importance of Daily Sun Protection

May is international skin cancer awareness month. So, every year, in May twenty-five  partner countries from around the world join together to raise awareness, conducting their own outreach programmes and public health initiatives with the primary objective of promoting sun safety.  In this week’s Blog, our expert skin therapist, Claire, reminds us why high factor SPF is arguably the most important product in your daily skincare regime and everyone should be using it – men and women alike!… Read on to find our more…

The Importance of Daily Sun Protection
New research by the Melanoma Awareness Working Group has found that nearly 90% of melanomas are preventable so raising awareness and sun protection education can make a positive impact by slowing the incidence of the disease (which is on the rise).

One of the Working Group’s key themes is to promote photoprotection. In a nutshell, this means promoting the daily use of sun protection, even in countries like Scotland where the sun is not always shining!

The trouble is that, despite the increased awareness of the damage the sun’s rays cause, many people still only think about applying sunscreen when they are abroad in a hot country. Some people also think that because you don’t see the immediate effects of sun damage, their skin will be ok in the future. But, regardless of the heat or sunshine, applying sunscreen daily not only protects you against the risk of skin cancer but also prevents against premature skin ageing.

So, at Clinetix, we take our responsibility to educate on the importance of applying high SPF sunscreen seriously.

The harmful UVA rays break down your skin’s collagen, accelerating the natural ageing process causing lines and wrinkles to appear much deeper whilst UVB rays can burn your skin and increase the risk of skin cancer. If, instead, you would like to slow down the natural ageing process and maintain as youthful an appearance as possible then, in our professional opinion, you should be applying daily sunscreen with a minimum of SPF30.

Did You Know…

It can take up to 15 years to see the effects of sun damage on the skin?  In this week’s #TuesdayTips, our expert therapist, Claire, advises on avoiding sun exposure and the use of sun beds.

#AskTheExperts
There is a huge variety of sunscreens available on the market and so product choice is important. The harmful effects of UV rays are now well known, but these are not the only rays that we need to protect against. The deep dermal layer of the skin is also damaged by visible and infrared light, and it is beneficial for anti-ageing to protect against all of these.
