CO2RE Laser Resurfacing
The characteristic signs of skin ageing are fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and strength, thickening and roughening of the skin’s surface and pigmentation changes. CO2 Laser Resurfacing is the gold standard treatment for reversing the signs of aging skin. The treatment requires the skin to be numbed with an anaesthetic, then the laser selectively removes a fraction of the upper layers of the skin, hence it is sometimes know as “fractional ablative resurfacing” The CO2RE laser also has the ability to treat deeper layers of the skin at the same time.
CO2RE laser treatments are performed at our Glasgow and Bothwell clinics by our medical team led by Drs Emma and Simon Ravichandran.
CO2RE is the worlds most advanced medical carbon dioxide laser. We choose to perform CO2 Laser resurfacing as it is the gold standard treatment for photo-aged skin and acne scarring. We use CO2RE to resurface the skin, causing tightening, smoothing, reducing lines, wrinkles and scars and pigmentation.
CO2RE is a form of fractional resurfacing. It works by removing a proportion of the skin and allowing it to regenerate a new and healthier skin. Deep treatments go beneath the epidermis and into the dermis and cause a regeneration of collagen at a deeper level. Therefore this results in greater improvements for skin laxity and wrinkles.
We can treat the face as a whole, for a global rejuvenation. We can also address specific areas separately, such as laser eye resurfacing for tightening loose crepey skin around the eye, and perioral resurfacing for smoothing wrinkles around the mouth. In addition, our medical team can treat other areas of the body, the commonest area being the back of the hands to remove age spots and tighten loose skin.
Consequently, the result of laser resurfacing is the epidermis (upper layer of the skin) regenerates to be smoother, more even toned and tighter. Most importantly, deeper treatments cause collagen development resulting in a plumper and stronger skin. You will see results after a couple of weeks and continue to improve for months after treatment. Following the laser resurfacing treatment your skin may appear red and inflamed for a while. The time for recovery depends on the depth of treatment and the good news is it can be as little as a few days for a light laser peel. Furthermore, we recommend allowing up to 10 days for the skin to recover to achieve more dramatic results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the treatment painful?
No the treatment is always done with anaesthetics, either a numbing cream for light treatments or full nerve blocks with injections for deep treatments. For very deep treatments sedation may also be given.
Am I a suitable candidate for treatment?
Ideal patients would have concerns about looseness of the skin, fine lines, acne scars, pigmentation, coarseness or uneven texture. The treatment will result in some downtime for skin to regenerate. The amount of time will depend on the depth of the treatment, anywhere between a couple of days to a couple of weeks for very deep treatments. You must be prepared for this.
What can I expect during a treatment?
After the skin has been anaesthetised, your skin is cleaned thoroughly and eye protection is applied. Your doctor will apply the laser to the areas required, this usually takes only half an hour. After the laser treatment a solution of PRP may be applied and the skin is cooled with ice packs and then treated with Dermalux LED Phototherapy. This helps reduce the inflammation and causes a faster healing. An ointment is applied to protect the skin from drying out and you will be given a home care pack to take home. You are typically in the clinic for 2 or 3 hours for a treatment. You are usually able to drive home after a treatment unless you have needed sedation.
What happens after the treatment?
There will be a recovery period that will depend on the depth of the treatment. You should keep your skin covered with an ointment that Clinetix will provide for the first two or three days. We will arrange for you to come back to the clinic three times in the first week after deep treatments for our therapists to clean your skin, provide a phototherapy treatment and reapply your ointment. The face will be red and may be weeping or oozing for a few days after a deep treatment. The redness will resolve after a few days and typically after about a week for deep treatments and after a couple of days for light treatments you can apply makeup and return to normal activities. In the days, weeks and months that follow you will notice your skin is smoother, tighter, more even, and has less wrinkles than before treatment.
How long does the treatment last?
Essentially it is a permanent treatment, which means that we will rejuvenate your skin to an extent, and then it will continue to age as normal. The degree of rejuvenation will depend on the depth of treatment and the number of treatments.
How much does treatment cost?
The cost of the treatments will depend on the depth of treatments and areas performed. Eye resurfacing starts at £300, light laser peels from £600 and deep peels from £1200
