There are a number of causes of irregular pigmentation in the skin. It may be hormonally related, sun damage or trauma related. Whatever the cause there is usually something we can do to improve the appearance or even completely remove the pigmentation problem. The underlying cause is usually related to the melanocytes, the pigment cells in the bottom layer of the epidermis.

Treatments to improve irregular pigmentation are performed in our Bothwell and Glasgow clinics by our expert aesthetic therapists.

Irregular pigmentation often known as ‘hyperpigmenation’ is when an area of the skin appears darker than the surrounding area. It occurs when the cells that produce melanin are activated either because they are unhealthy or damaged.

There are a number of treatments that can effect these cells including lasers, phototherapy, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), topical skin care and chemical peels.  For pigmentation problems we recommend booking a consultation with one of our aesthetic therapists in the first instance so we can analyse your skin and arrive at an appropriate treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes pigmentation problems?

In Scotland we strangely enough see a lot of sun damage related pigmentation problems! Known as post inflammatory pigmentation it can occur after repeated or severe sunburn.  We also treat pigmentation problems caused by melasma, acne and pregnancy.

What is the best treatment for pigmentation?

A broad spectrum suncream!  Sun exposure activates the melanocytes in your epidermis to produce more melanin (pigment)

What treatments are available?

Its usually best to start with topical treatments, cleansers and creams that contain active ingredients to reduce your melanin (pigment) production and also turn the skin over faster so melanin laden cells are exfoliated.  Regular phototherapy sessions in the clinic also help reduce melanin production.  The next step would be a gentle chemical peel specifically targeted at pigmented areas.  IPL and or Laser treatments are also used for larger areas if required.

Can you treat pigmentation during pregnancy?

Some treatments are suitable for pregnant women, for example LED phototherapy.  Some topical treatments such as retinoic acid are not recommended.
