Pigmentation

What is hyperpigmentation, exactly?

Hyperpigmentation, also referred to as melasma, age spots, liver spots, or sun spots, is a prevalent condition that can manifest across all skin types. This phenomenon arises from an excess production of melanin in specific regions, resulting in the darkening of patches of skin relative to adjacent lighter areas.

Dispelling the Myths

A prevalent hyperpigmentation myth is that it affects only certain skin tones. In reality, hyperpigmentation can impact individuals of all skin types and tones, albeit in varying degrees. Dismissing it as a concern only for specific ethnicities can lead to inadequate skincare practices and delayed treatment.

What Causes Pigmentation?

Melanin Production

The primary factor, where an increase in melanin production in the skin leads to darker pigmentation.

Sun Exposure

Prolonged exposure to UV rays from the sun stimulates melanin production, causing tanning and other pigmentation issues.

Hormonal Changes

Fluctuations in hormones, particularly during pregnancy or due to contraceptive use, can trigger excess melanin production, leading to conditions like melasma or chloasma.

Inflammation and Injury

Skin inflammation resulting from acne, wounds, or skin trauma can lead to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, causing dark spots or patches on the affected area.

How to Treat Pigmentation

IPL Photorejuvenation
IPL Photorejuvenation

An ideal treatment for pigmentation issues, IPL (intense pulsed light) is a photo rejuvenation technology that has pulsed light waves absorbed by the melanin in your skin, breaking down pigmentation. In turn, the pigment fragments which is then broken down by the body.

ND:YAG Laser
ND:YAG Laser

A highly effective treatment for pigmentation, an Nd:YAG laser helps with pigmentation by using a special light that pigmented areas in our skin (like dark spots) absorb. When these areas absorb the light, they heat up and break down, making them easier for our body to get rid of. At Clientix, we select the best-in-class M22 or Excel V+ lasers to transform our patients’ pigmentation issues.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel can be the ideal solution for pigmentation issues, and are a favourite treatment for pigmentation among our skin therapists. As a peel sloughs away old skin, it takes dark spots and uneven pigmentation with it. At Clinetix, we select the EnerPeel collection not only for its outstanding results, but for its wide range of options to suit a patient’s bespoke skin health needs.
