The Magic of Microneedling

The Magic of Microneedling

You’ve probably heard about Microneedling but do you know how beneficial Microneedling can be for your skin? There’s a reason you’ve seen so many articles about celebrities having microneedling treatments. To name a few microneedling is safe for all skin types, can rejuvenate your skin, improve fine lines and wrinkles and improve the appearance of acne scars.

So what is microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation treatment which utilises the skins own ability to regenerate and heal itself. It involves using a device with multiple tiny needles to create thousands of tiny puncture wounds on the upper layers of the skin. When your skin is ‘injured’ from the tiny puncture wounds your body uses its own repair mechanisms to remove damaged skin. Microneedling also stimulates your production of collagen and elastin. What this means is that over the course of 6 weeks Microneedling will gradually prompt the rejuvenation process to create plumper and firmer skin.

What do we use to perform microneedling?

A variety of devices are available use for microneedling treatments. At Clinetix we use the Dermaroller. The Dermaroller uses tiny needles called ‘disk-needles’ which mechanically perforate the outer layer of the skin. We use the Dermaroller as it gives our therapists greater control over the treatment to make it as painless as possible.

Many of our clients are concerned about the procedure being painful. An hour before each treatment we apply an aesthetic numbing cream to the area which will be treated. Few clients experience slight discomfort but the majority of clients describe the sensation as the skin feeling hot and tight.

Where can it be used?

Although microneedling is performed mainly on the face we can also perform it on areas such as the arms, abdomen, thighs and buttocks. Most clients will typically request microneedling for the full face however we can also target areas such as under the eyes or areas of acne scarring. So if you have acne scarring on your arms or mild stretch marks on your thighs microneedling can help improve the appearance of these.

What can I expect during the treatment?

To begin the treatment we will remove the anaesthetic cream. Your aesthetician will then clean your skin thoroughly. We then move the dermaroller over your face or target area to create thousands of tiny puncture wounds in the upper layers of the skin. We find that for a full face treatment it usually takes around twenty minutes to perform the treatment. After the microneedling treatment we will cleanse your skin again before applying a vitamin serum or gel. This lets the vitamins soak directly into the skin through the micro punctures and stimulate multiple healing and rejuvenating processes.

What can I expect after the treatment?

Immediately after a microneedling treatment your skin will be a little pink or red. Most of our clients compare this to looking like they have sunburn! The redness can last from a few hours to a couple of days depending on how deep your treatment was.

After the treatment we would ask that you don’t touch your skin for a few hours! If you do touch your face you risk unwanted bacteria entering into the tiny puncture wounds on your face. The evening of your treatment you can shower as normal and clean your skin with water or a simple cleanser. The day after your microneedling treatment are able to wear makeup as usual. We would recommend using mineral makeup to help limit any parabens and synthetic preservatives coming into contact with your skin.

The day after your treatment you will notice that your skin looks a little plumper and firmer. As the rejuvenation process continues over the next six weeks you will notice a gradual reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Over this time you will also notice that your skin is tighter with an improved tone and texture. You will also find that that acne scars will appear smaller and shallower and pigmented areas may appear lighter.

How often do I need the treatment?

The number of treatments required will be dependent on a number of factors. For example if you have mild acne scars you may only need around 3 treatments to reduce them. We find that most clients typically require between 3 – 6 treatments.

Although microneedling is great for improving the appearance of mild to moderate acne scars if you do have severe acne scars you may need to consider more aggressive treatments such as CO2RE Laser Resurfacing. One of our expert aestheticians will usually carry out your treatment. However if you require a deep aggressive treatment one of our medical team will perform the treatment.
