Microneedling

Microneedling is a technique for improving skin tone, smoothing fine lines and wrinkles, restoring elasticity and rigidity, and reducing acne scarring.

The procedure works by inducing natural collagen formation in the dermis by means of controlled wounding response.  Topical anaesthetic is applied to the skin, then a micro needling device is used to created tens of thousands of micro perforations in the epidermis and dermis.  Inflammatory mediators and growth factors leak out of capillaries as a result of this controlled injury which encourage new collagen and elastin formation (neo collagenesis).  During the treatment topical creams and serums containing vitamins A and C can be applied that will be absorbed directly into the dermis, further stimulating the regeneration of the dermis.

The treatment usually takes about one and a half hours, the first hour for the topical anaesthetic to work and half an hour for the microneedling procedure.  After the procedure the skin will be reddened, the appearance is similar to a mild sun burn.  This usually subsides within a day.  After treatment the skin may feel dry and itchy as the epidermis heals and it is recommended to moisturise frequently.  The effects start to become visibly by two weeks and continue to improve for six weeks.  Because the effect is caused by increasing the natural collagen and elastin the results can continue for years.  The treatment can be repeated every six weeks as required.  Usually between three and six treatments will achieve the desired result.
