5 Facts About Retinol

5 Facts About Retinol

You’ve probably heard us talk about retinol, you may even already use it as part of your daily skincare regime. But do you know these 5 facts about the remarkable anti-ageing ingredient?

1. Retinol can help prevent acne

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A which can be used to unclog pores, cut down excess oil production and prevent dead skin cells from clogging pores.

2. Retinol slows the ageing process

Retinol can be found in a number of anti-ageing products such as ZO Skinhealth Ossential Advanced Radical Night Repair. Retinol encourages the natural production of collagen and improves skin elasticity to plump out fine lines. ZO Skinhealth Ossential Advanced Radical Night Repair is one of Dr Emma Ravichandran’s go-to products for targeting UV-damaged and aged skin. With a 1% retinol concentration it helps to improve the skin’s brightness, reduce brown spots and create more even toned skin.

3. You must create a tolerance for Retinol

As Retinol is such a potent product you must build up your tolerance for retinol. If you were to start out by using retinol daily without building up to it you would likely experience red, irritated and flaky skin. We recommend you start slowly, using retinol once a week, then twice a week, then every other night etc until your skin gets used to it.

4. Retinol doesn’t thin your skin

Retinol will thin out and help remove the dead superficial layer of the skin but it will also help thicken the dermis underneath it. When it comes to anti-ageing the dermis is the important layer of skin because wrinkles occur in the dermis.

5. SPF is essential if you use Retinol

Retinol reveals new skin which can be delicate and should not be exposed to the sun. Retinol is extremely photosensitive and can make your skin a lot more sensitive to the sun. Due to this we recommend using retinol at night for best results.
